通常用来表示道歉的客套用语有：
I must apologize.

当一方对另一方表示道歉的时候，另一方通常应作出相应的回答。常见的回答道歉的方式有：
That"s [It"s] all right.
没关系。
That"s quite all right.
那真的没关系。

Never mind.
没关系。
Not at all.
一点也不；不要紧；没关系。
It"s nothing.

上面我们对道歉的常用客套语作了一个简单的归纳，由此我们也可以看出，道歉的方式是多种多样的。
但是在通常情况下，人们多用 I"m sorry, Excuse me. 之类的，至于 Please forgive me, I apologize, I beg your pardon. 等道歉用语则多用于冒犯他人情节比较严重时才用。
在英美国家，道歉的方式有时很简单，仅一个 Sorry 即可了事，但有时也可能比较复杂，不仅要道歉、认错，而且还要说明原因，甚至作出保证。
有的语言学家认为，作为完整的道歉通常应包括五个方面：
道歉、说明原因、承担责任、提出补补救办法、保证今后言行检点。
但是由于场合不同、对象不同、出错的性质不同、冒犯的程度不同等，也并不是说每次道歉都必须包括这五个部分。一般说来，冒犯的程度越深，出错的性质越严重，那么道歉所包括的内容就越多。
比较各类道歉用语，我们发现，在众多的表达中，使用得最经常的只有三个，即：
I"m sorry, Excuse me, I beg your pardon。
所以学会使用这三个表达，可以说是掌握“道歉”的重点和关键。顺便说一句，这三个表达除了表示“道歉”外，有时也可能有其他意思。下面对这三个结构的用法作一归纳：
一、I"m sorry. 的用法
1. 表示同情、惋惜或后悔，意为：我很难过；我很不安；真后悔。如：
I"m sorry to hear that your father is dead.
听说你亲去世了，我很难过。
I"m sorry to have been so foolish.
真后悔，我太蠢了。
I"m sorry you told me a lie.
你对我撒谎，真是遗憾。
2. 表示道歉，意为：对不起；很抱歉。如：
I"m sorry I broke your pen.
对不起，我把你的笔弄坏了。
I"m sorry, I didn"t mean to hurt your feelings.
对不起，我不是有意要伤害你的感情。
Sorry, did I step on your foot?
对不起，我踩你的脚了吗?
3. 表示客气地提出异议或拒绝(其后常接but分句)，意为：对不起；很抱歉。如：
I"m sorry but I don"t agree.
对不起，我不同意。
(I"m) sorry, but I must refuse.
很抱歉，我只好拒绝了。
Sorry, but you can"t come in.
对不起，你不能进来。
4. 表示轻视或爱莫能助(其后常接 for 短语)，含义视上下文而定。如：
I"m sorry for you, but you have been rather foolish,haven"t you?
我很替你难过，不过你也太蠢了，不是吗?
I"m sorry for you, but isn"t it your own fault?
我又有什么办法呢? 这还不是你自己的错。
5. 表示没有听清对方的话，请对方重说一遍 (主要用于英国英语中，相当于 I beg your pardon)，意为: 对不起，请再说一遍；对不起，我没听清；你说什么？如：
A: I"m cold. 我很冷。
B: Sorry? 你说什么?
A: I said I was cold. 我说我很冷。
二、Excuse me. 的用法
1. 用来向不熟悉的人打听情况或提出请求（其实质用法是引人注意)，意为：请问；劳驾；对不起。如：
Excuse me, does this bus go to the railway station?
请问这公共汽车去火车站吗?
Excuse me, sir, will you tell me the way to the post office?
劳驾，你可以告诉我去邮局的路吗?
Excuse me, but will you please lend me a match?
对不起，请借个火好吗?
2. 用来客气地打断别人的话，意为：对不起。如：
Excuse me, what you said was wrong.
对不起，你说错了。
Excuse me, telegram has just arrived.
对不起，电报刚到。
3. 用作从别人面前经过时的礼貌用语，意为：劳驾；对不起。如：
Excuse me, could I get past?
劳驾，让我过去好吗?
He pushed his way through the crowd, saying "Excuse me. "
他一边说着“对不起”，一边从人群中挤过。
4. 表示中途退席或暂时告退，意为：对不起。如：
Excuse me, just a moment.

7. 表示有礼貌地询问某事或请求允许，意为：请问；对不起。如：

8. 用来代替 sorry 表示道歉(主要用于美国英语中)，意为：对不起。如：
He said "Excuse me" when he stepped on my foot.
他踩了我的脚时，说了声“对不起”。
9. 表示不耐烦或不愿帮忙，意为：对不起。如：
Excuse me, I"m busy.
对不起，我正忙着呢。
Excuse me, I don"t know either.
对不起，我也不知道。
10. 用来对有失礼仪的行为表示抱歉。如：
打嗝时说一声Oh, excuse me；
打喷嚏时说 Excuse me for sneezing 等。
11. 用于if you"ll excuse me, 意为: 如果你们不见怪(介意)的话。如：

三、I beg your pardon. 的用法：
1. 表示道歉 (比 I"m sorry. 更正式，也说 Pardon me. )，意为：对不起。如：
A: I beg your pardon, I suppose I should have knocked.
对不起，我想我本来应该敲门的。
B: That"s quite all right.
那没关系。
2. 表示没听清或没听懂对方的话，请对方再说一遍 (也说Beg your pardon, Beg pardon, Pardon. 等。注意：说时用升调)，意为：请再说一遍；对不起，我没听清。如：
A: Turn off the light, please.
请把灯关掉。
B: I beg your pardon.
对不起，我没听清。
A: Where"s the post office?
邮局在什么地方?
B: I beg your pardon?
请问，你说什么?
A: I asked where the post office is.
我问邮局在什么地方。
3. 用来提出异议(也说 Pardon me. 这样用时语气坚定且不友好)，意为：对不起。如：
I beg your pardon, he was not there.
对不起，他不在那儿。
I beg your pardon, what you say is not exactly correct.
对不起，你说的话不完全对。
Pardon me, but this is my coat.
对不起，这是我的外套。
4. 用来引起对方注意(如：要打扰对方，与陌生搭话等，也说 I beg pardon, Pardon me. 等)，意为：对不起；打扰一下；请问。如：
