Are test scores the backbone of meritocracy or the nexus of privilege?

Like any hotbed of scholarly activity, the University of California (UC) is no stranger to rows. Recently a debate over the use of sats and acts, tests used in college admissions, has spilled out from campus and into the courtroom.

XX is no stranger to… He is a public figure that is no stranger to controversy.

从第二个句子中可以学习一个句式 a debate over…has spilled out from…and into…

Recently a debate about whether students should wear school uniforms has spilled out from campus and into the wider society. Some believe that wearing school uniforms is good for students" physical and mental wellbeing. Others, however, feel that this practice can do more harm than good.

Business and the next recession

A crisis may not so much impact tech companies as accelerate the decline of the “old”, non-digital economy.

从这里可以学习一个句式:not so much…as… 不如说……”(used to say that one description of someone or something is less suitable or correct than another)

As an adult man in the present day, Liam gets into regular scrapes that have their origins in his teenage years. The audience is then flashed back to the early 00s for a dose of nostalgia that isnot so much soul-searching as soul-scraping.

(1) Donald Trump is not so much a politician as a businessman.

(2) Many people are not so much incapable of dealing with challenges as unwilling to confront them.

要表达“利用好某事物”,常见的说法是:make good use of something/take advantage of something,这里介绍一个新的说法:

Even the success of a 5g iPhone would only be a temporary salve. As the decoupling of the American and Chinese technological ecosystems grinds on, it will only get harder for Apple to tap intothe Chinese market and run its Chinese supply chains efficiently.

句子中grind on意思是“(令人厌烦地)持续下去”(to continue for an unpleasantly long time),例如:Civil war in the Sudan has been grinding on for nine years.

Tap into something意思是“利用、发掘(已有的资源、知识等)”(to make use of a source of energy, knowledge, etc. that already exists),这一短语在地道英文中有很多应用,比如要表达“管理者应该激发员工的潜能”,可以说:

Managers should try to tap into their staff’s full potential.

Teachers should encourage their students to tap into learning materials on the internet.

A quirk in the law means that America’s kidney shortage costs taxpayers

What seemed like a small exemption then has morphed into something much larger. Originally designed to cover 10,000 patients, the esrd programme now includes 512,000.

从这里我们可以学习一个句式:What seemed like…has…

What seemed likea sideshow has increasingly given Kremlin loyalists an alternative explanation for the cover-up, or just an excuse not to discuss the case.

What seems like…may/can/could…

We should pay particular attention to details, because what seems like a small mistake may end up leading to dire consequences.

(1) a debate over…has spilled out from…and into…

(2) not so much…as…

(3) tap into

(4) What seemed like…has…
