1、A penny for your thoughts
A way of asking what someone is thinking
你呆呆地想什么呢?----非常古老的习用语,在约翰·海伍德所编的《格言集》(Proverbs, 1546)中就出现过。古时英国的penny与现在的‘便士’不同,是相当大的银币,币值也高。因此就产生了A penny for your thoughts.的说法,作为What are you thinking about?(你在想什么?)的委婉语,仅限于相当亲密的伙伴之间。”
2、A hot potato
Speak of an issue (mostly current) which many people are talking about and which is usually disputed
烫手山芋----″potato″是马铃薯,那么″Hot potato″通常指一些棘手的、难以处理的问题,在中文中我们有类似的表达“烫手山芋”。
3、Actions speak louder than words
People"s intentions can be judged better by what they do than what they say.
事实胜于雄辩!----行动比语言更响亮;这句话选自美国诗人亨利·沃兹沃思·朗费罗(Henry Wordsworth Longfellow)的长诗《海华沙之歌》(The song of Hiawatha).
4、Add insult to injury
To further a loss with mockery or indignity; to worsen an unfavorable situation.
雪上加霜,在伤口上撒盐----Insult 是侮辱,injury是受伤。Add insult to injury 要按字面来理解,它的意思是:受了伤之外还受到侮辱。但是,add insult to injury作为一个习惯用语,它的意思就是:雪上加霜。
5、At the drop of a hat
Meaning: without any hesitation; instantly.
马上、立刻、毫不犹豫----“At the drop of a hat”这个表达方式据说源自美国开拓时期,按照当时的风俗,你把帽子扔在地上就是意味着你马上要和对方准备干上一架。如今这个习语的意思是指不加计划或准备马上做某事。
6、Back to the drawing board
When an attempt fails and it"s time to start all over.
重新开始、重头再来----Back to the drawing board, 这个说法起源于二次世界大战时《纽约客》杂志上的一副漫画。在漫画中,很多军人奔向一架坠毁的飞机,而设计这架飞机的工程师把图纸夹在胳膊底下,默默地走开了。漫画的标题是:“唉,只好重新拿起绘图板了”。意思是,设计师看到他的飞机在战场上坠毁,只好从头再来,再设计一架。
7、Ball is in your court
It is up to you to make the next decision or step
一切由你决定----这个说法来源于网球。
8、Barking up the wrong tree
Looking in the wrong place. Accusing the wrong person
那你可就找错了人、攻击错了对象----发源于19世纪的美国,当时的猎狗如果发明猎物,就会狂吠把猎物赶到树上,然后对着树根处叫,提醒猎人。
9、Be glad to see the back of
Be happy when a person leaves.
很高兴看到你离开----巴不得、早点结束,会很高兴的意思。
10、Beat around the bush
Avoiding the main topic. Not speaking directly about the issue.
拐弯抹角----据说从前英国贵族打猎时,会先派人进树林,用树枝敲打树,好让鸟类或小动物因受惊吓而跑出。后来 beat aroundthe bush 演变成“拐弯抹角”、“旁敲侧击”或“说话绕圈子”等意。
11、Best of both worlds
Meaning: All the advantages.
两全其美----所有的优点。
12、Best thing since sliced bread
A good invention or innovation. A good idea or plan.
非常好的发明或创意----面包在世界上很多国家算主食供人们享用。当切片面包被推向市场时,厂商把这一产品作为一个伟大的成就呈现给消费者们。如今,“the best thing since sliced bread 自切片面包以来最好的发明”这个表达常被用于介绍可以提高我们生活水平的新发明和新装置。
13、Bite off more than you can chew
To take on a task that is way to big.
贪多嚼不烂----承担了过多的工作而不能完成!
14、Blessing in disguise
Something good that isn"t recognized at first.
因祸得福----以为是倒霉事,可结果证明反倒是件好事。塞翁失马,焉知非福。
15、Burn the midnight oil
To work late into the night, alluding to the time before electric lighting.
开夜车----以前人们使用油灯照明,如果有人在深夜还烧着灯油,即表示那个人仍在努力的埋头苦干。现在,我们不再使用油灯,但是这意思依然保留下来,因而有 burn the midnight oil 这个习语的出现。指通宵达旦地学习或者工作,即是我们所谓的「开夜车」。
16、Can"t judge a book by its cover
Cannot judge something primarily on appearance.
人不可貌相----不要通过封面来判断一本书的好坏,不要根据外表来判断事物!
17、Caught between two stools
When someone finds it difficult to choose between two alternatives.
两头空,两边不讨好----当一个人发现很难在两个抉择间做出决定。
18、Costs an arm and a leg
This idiom is used when something is very expensive.
贵的要命----比喻某笔买卖不划算,成本高,代价大(因为胳膊和腿是无价之宝)。
19、Cross that bridge when you come to it
Deal with a problem if and when it becomes necessary, not before.
船到桥头自然直----等事情发生了在应对。
20、Cry over spilt milk
When you complain about a loss from the past.
悔恨莫及----为已经打翻的牛奶痛哭是没有用的,过去的失败而沮丧。 不要做无益的后悔。
21、Curiosity killed the cat
Being Inquisitive can lead you into an unpleasant situation.
好奇害死猫----西方传说猫有九条命,最后恰恰是死于自己的好奇心,可见好奇心有时是多么可怕。当人们讲Curiosity killed the cat. 时,其实不是真的讲好奇心把猫杀死了,而是说好奇心可能使自己丧命的。
22、Cut corners
When something is done badly to save money.
偷工减料----找更方便的办法,或更便宜的办法来做一件事。也可引申为“抄近路、走捷径”。
23、Cut the mustard [possibly derived from "cut the muster"]
To succeed; to come up to expectations; adequate enough to compete or participate
符合条件----表达“有妥善处理事情或工作的能力”
24、Devil"s Advocate
To present a counter argument
唱反调的人----你有了一个好点子,兴致勃勃地讲给所有人听,但是偏有人说想法挺好的但可行性差点。你提了一个好方案,正等着大家鼓掌通过,但是偏有人揪着其中的细节挑刺。To present a counter argument用来形容这些唱反调的人。
25、Don"t count your chickens before the eggs have hatched
This idiom is used to express "Don"t make plans for something that might not happen".
别高兴的太早了----出源于《伊索寓言》"The milkmaid and her pail of milk"篇。用以劝告对方不要过早乐观,过早地打如意算盘;也可指指任何事要有目标,但不能急于求成,要稳扎稳打,按部就班的进行。
26、Don"t give up the day job
You are not very good at something. You could definitely not do it professionally.
做好眼下的工作,不要追求不可能成功的事情----比较幽默的非正式的用法,劝告不要追求不可能成功的事情。
27、Don"t put all your eggs in one basket
Do not put all your resources in one possibility.
不要孤注一掷----不要把所有的鸡蛋放在一个篮子里,不要把一切希望寄托在一件事上。
28、Drastic times call for drastic measures
When you are extremely desperate you need to take drastic actions.
非常时期需要采取非常举措----当你非常绝望,当事情无法正常解决时,可以采取激烈的的行动。
29、Elvis has left the building
The show has come to an end. It"s all over.
一切都结束了----埃尔维斯已经离开那栋大楼了,不在了,表示一切都结束了。
30、Every cloud has a silver lining
Be optimistic, even difficult times will lead to better days.
祸兮福依----出自英国诗人约翰·弥尔顿的作品《在勒德洛城堡展示的面具》(A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle)说黑暗中总有一丝光明,也可引申为“守得云开见月明”。
31、Far cry from
Very different from.
天壤之别----远远不同,非常不同的意思,也可说为大相径庭!
32、Feel a bit under the weather
Meaning: Feeling slightly ill.
身体不舒服----以前水手出海远航的时候,部分水手晕船时,他就会躲到甲板,这样就远离糟糕的天气,因此用under the weather来指代心情不好,或感觉不舒服。
33、Give the benefit of the doubt
Believe someone"s statement, without proof.
怀疑既然未能证实,且往好的一面想----法庭假如没有充分证据证实被告有罪,那么,为免制造冤狱,实行宁纵毋枉,被告得判无罪,直译是“既有疑点,利归某人(被告)”。现在,这句法律用语往往给引用到其他场合,没有证据的事儿且相信某人是无辜的。
